Standard Shipping Container CBM & Capacity Reference
When planning container shipments, usable volume is always lower than theoretical volume due to carton shapes, pallet spacing, and loading clearance.
| Container Size | Internal Dimensions (L Ă— W Ă— H) | Max Theoretical Volume | Typical Usable Volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20ft Standard | 5.90 m × 2.35 m × 2.39 m | 33.2 CBM | 28 – 30 CBM |
| 40ft Standard | 12.03 m × 2.35 m × 2.39 m | 67.7 CBM | 58 – 62 CBM |
| 40ft High Cube (HC) | 12.03 m × 2.35 m × 2.70 m | 76.4 CBM | 68 – 70 CBM |
| 45ft High Cube (HC) | 13.56 m × 2.35 m × 2.70 m | 86.0 CBM | 78 – 82 CBM |

What About 10, 30, or 32-Foot Cargo Needs?
Small Shipments (Under 15 CBM)
For cargo measuring 1 CBM to 15 CBM, Less-than-Container Load (LCL) consolidation is more cost-effective than booking a dedicated Full Container Load (FCL).
Custom / 32ft Containers
Specialized 30ft or 32ft domestic containers offer roughly 45 to 52 CBM of interior capacity, but are rarely used on standard deep-sea ocean routes compared to ISO 20ft and 40ft units.
